On our Stories page, we have put the call out for you to share a story, observation, or idea (big or small) on how you re-imagine downtown Vancouver. In addition to the longer stories that we have been featuring, we have also received several shorter submissions. Here is another round of “quick takes.”
Vancouver is on the verge of becoming something incredible. If we need to make sure housing becomes more affordable (especially for the middle class), our city more environmentally sustainable, our rapid transit more expansive (putting street cars on already crowded streets makes no sense), and our architecture taller and more exciting.

I love the idea of even more unique pedestrian spaces in downtown Vancouver! I love the bench that exists outside of Cafe Crepe on Robson Street, and can imagine more interesting features that leverage the incredible potential of our public space.

The growing wealth divide in this city is heart breaking at times. It takes only the span of a few blocks to walk from million dollar condos to people living in bed bug ridden crack shacks. Our priority in this city and province should be to provide for our vulnerable and to balance that privilege.

Instead of tall towers casting shadows along West Georgia, why don’t we create a gateway to the City as Paris, London all have? It would be perfect where West Pender/Georgia/Nicola/Cardero intersect.
Do it now before developers destroy the pause in a busy road and the towers create shadows, and suck the air of the area while low light makes our city feel grim. It would be special if Vancouverites and its visitors can have a grand entry into and out of the city.

I have lived downtown for 20 years. On a typical day, I am asked for money by 10 people: some lying half naked on the ground, others with their pets, others looking plain stoned. In my opinion it’s getting worse. There are more beggars each day.
The other problem I have with downtown is the loud music in many venues and stores. It is stressful. Why must we endure this while shopping or trying to have a conversation There are very few nice lounges for 40+ demographics where we can meet, socialize and hear ourselves speak!

Get rid of all street parking. That should help the traffic.

In the million dollar question there was nothing about having more ecologically vibrant greenspaces. This is something any green city should be considering, but something the greenest city should be prioritizing.
Our greenspaces enhance our communities, give us spaces to meet our friends, and liven up the streetscape. We just need to get creative about how we integrate life into the urban landscape.
