On our Stories page, we have put the call out for you to share a story, observation, or idea (big or small) on how you re-imagine downtown Vancouver. Here is how Sean Bickerton re-imagines downtown Vancouver:
When I was a boy of 12 I started taking the Greyhound bus from south Surrey into Vancouver for violin lessons every Saturday. I’d arrive at the Larwill Park Bus Depot, go for my lesson above Ward Music on Hastings, to the counter of Woolworths for lunch, and then to youth orchestra.
My junior and senior high school drama class used to come into Vancouver once a month to attend the Playhouse Theatre company productions of Waiting for Godot and other amazing plays.
My mother took me to hear my first opera, Carmen, at the VOA. My dad took me to hear Oscar Peterson at The Cave.
One of the highlights of my young life was performing alongside members of the VSO on the Orpheum stage in a joint concert with the youth orchestra, under Maestro Akiyama.
From UVic, a dozen of us came over to Vancouver to hear Arthur Rubinstein perform at the QE Theatre.
For me, downtown Vancouver was where I came for art, music, culture, enlightenment, excitement, sophistication and fun!
